Wilfrid Laurier University

Named after the seventh Canadian Prime Minister, this public university was established by an Act of Parliament in 1973, but it has its roots in the Lutheran faith under the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary that dates back to 1911. When the Lutherans could no longer invest in the institution yet government couldn’t avail funding to it due to its religious affiliation, the Lutherans stepped out and government took over.

When this higher institution was elevated to a university funded by the government, it was only logical that a new name would be found for it. Out of a list of 94 names proposed, Wilfrid Laurier University was selected and it has had that name to-date.

Its academic programs are offered under a variety of faculties like that of music, arts, education, business and economics, and so on.
